Rules of Civility: A Novel

Rules of Civility: A Novel - Amor Towles I enjoyed this book for its wit and characters, though I didn’t find it quite as light and sparkling as I’d assumed based on some reviews, which meant I was also pleasantly surprised by its depth. It’s certainly not a dark book, and there’s plenty of gin and snappy dialogue (if you like that sort of thing), but it’s also a book about roads not taken and misjudgments and misconstruals, if not actually regrets. And when it’s told by a sharp first-person narrator, who just when you think she’s been cornered into saying something emotionally trite like “How could you do such a thing?” instead blurts out “Off with your head!”—well, it’s hard for me to argue with anything she may say or do.
