Enjoyed it as a slightly macabre soap opera, but I wasn't really feeling the gothic ghost-story aspect until nearly the end. Loved the very end, for sure, especially that last paragraph or two. On the whole, though, I think I felt too detached from most of the action, courtesy of the "observer being told the whole story by an observer" construct. I was curious about the characters (a couple of them), but just too far removed to care very much, particularly in the second half.
